Creating Pathways for Safe, Orderly and Responsible Migration for Ensuring Social Sustainability in Sugar Supply Chain in Maharashtra, India (COSMOS) is a three-year project launched on 1 October 2025 in collaboration with the Coalition for Responsible Sugarcane India (CRSI) and with the support of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Migration Agency. The project seeks to address the root causes of migration directly within the district of origin of sugarcane farm workers, strengthening social safeguards and support systems. It employs a systemic approach to finding collaborative solutions aimed at improving social sustainability in the sugarcane supply chain through participatory and community-based engagement models, scalable solutions, and focused interventions such as migration mapping, responsible recruitment practices, grievance redressal mechanisms, child protection and development facilities, and Migrant Resource Centers (MRCs) for awareness and access to services. The interventions designed for Maharashtra will serve as a pilot for other Indian states, benefiting migrant sugarcane farm workers, particularly women and their dependent communities.
